1. the quality or state of being conscious or aware of something.
2. a mental state achieved by focusing one’s awareness on the present moment, while calmly acknowledging and accepting one’s feelings, thoughts, and bodily sensations, used as a therapeutic technique.
3. realizing you are not psychotic or deranged even though you think everyone else has there shit together but you (ok, I made this definition up).
Mindfulness…sounds easy enough, right??
Well, bad news alert!
It sounds easy and then you feel like a pre-schooler at snack time desperately trying to stick the straw in the Capri Sun while your friends are chugging down their drinks. Meditation, self-care, yoga, visualizing…
honestly, they all sound easy peasy, but then why are we so stinking bad at actually putting them into practice?
After being on this Zen journey for what seems like forever (since I can barely remember life without kids), I guess I’ve finally realized that mindfulness is not really an action, but more of a state of being…
a mindset and approach to living.
I also have discovered that the more I am consciously making choices to be aware and present, the easier it becomes…kind of like a muscle (maybe not the Kegel muscle, but you get my drift) that I’m consistently exercising and flexing.
In many ways, “mindfulness” can feel elusive, difficult to define, and too easy to overlook or forget, so I’ve decided to commit a day each week incorporating a little more mindfulness, and I can’t think of a better day to embody mindfulness than Mondays (because let’s be real, Monday’s have always sucked)!!
So screw it, let’s make Mondays great again… but for real!
